Requesting Material

Need books or articles that you can't find at the MSU Libraries? Or do you want to use MSU Libraries materials but you are not located in East Lansing? Find your location (East Lansing or Outside East Lansing) on this page to get instructions on how to access and retrieve books and journal articles.

Loansome Doc is a fee based service for requesting articles in PubMed from the MSU Libraries.  This is a good option for people not affiliated with MSU.  MSU affiliates with an MSU netID can request material for free using the systems described below.

East Lansing (campus)

Need a book:

  • Check the MSU Library Catalog. If you only need a chapter from a book that is in the MSU Libraries, MSU faculty, staff and graduate/professional students can request that the MSU Libraries copy that chapter and send it to them (usually by email). See MARS: MSU Article Retrieval Service for details.
  • Not available at MSU Libraries? Request the book through InterLibrary Services

Need a journal article:

  • Look for links to full text within a literature database.

  • Check A-Z Title List of Electronic Journals from MSU Libraries E- Resources page for the journal title.
  • If the article is not available electronically, search the MSU Libraries' Catalog to see if it is available in hard copy. Be sure to note the year and volume you need. If something is only available in hard copy, MSU faculty, staff and graduate/professional students can request that the MSU Libraries make a copy of the item and send it to them (usually by email). See MARS: MSU Article Retrieval Service for details.
  • If it is not available through the MSU Library at all, request a copy through the MSU Libraries' Article Reach system. The article will come electronically, and you will receive notice via email.
