FOLIO FAQ - What to know about this transition

We are excited to announce that we are moving to a new catalog from June 27th through the 30th. As we make this transition, some services will be affected. We have an FAQ to help you understand what is happening and how it impacts you.

What is the catalog and why are you changing it?

The catalog is an online database of the books, ebooks, journals, and other material that the library owns. The new library system allows us to update the functionality and usability of our system to make it easier to find the material you need.

Can I still browse the collection in person?

Yes! Nothing is changing with our physical collection.

Will the online catalog for print material still be available?

During the transition, our old catalog will still be available on our website until replaced. After we move to the new catalog, the old catalog will be temporarily available until the end of July at: https://magic.msu.edu/

Can I still borrow books and other material?

Yes! You can also still check out material. Staff will need to do so manually using paper slips so it will look a little different, but you will be able to use material as normal.

Can I have material available for pick-up or delivered to me?

During the transition time, you will not be able to request material for pick up at the Main Library or Business Library Circulation Desks. You will be able to request material for pickup in the Luxor One Lockers, Faculty/Staff Office Delivery, Distance Delivery Services, and Request a Book Chapter. The option to request material to be held at the circulations desks will become available again after we are in the new system.

Will I be able to renew books?

During the transition time, you will not be able to renew items online. Once our new system is operating on June 30, you’ll be able to renew your material as normal. During the transition time period, all fines incurred will be waived.

Will I still be able to borrow course reserves material for my classes?

Yes, our print materials are still available for checkout.

Will I still be able to request digital copies of Reserve Material?

Yes, you will still be able request this material.

Can I still use e-books and e-journals?

Yes! Those are still accessible via the library website: E-Books & Journals

Can I still borrow material from another library?

Yes! You’ll need to go to Get it @ MSU to request it. However, it may be minimally delayed during the transition time.

Is MelCat available yet?

No, we are still unable to borrow material from other Michigan libraries via MelCat. Please continue to access MelCat resources through your public library.

What happens June 30th with the new system?

Our new system will be in place and ready to go! We’ll continue to improve the functionality of our new system moving forward to enhance access to our materials. You will be able to check-out books quickly and renew books online again. Our delivery and pick-up options will become available again. You’ll also still be able to search for material using the main search box on the library website.

Who do I contact if I still have questions or concerns?
