Michigan State University

On March 16, Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed an Executive Order temporarily closing many public spaces. All academic libraries are included in this order. The Main Library is closed, but we still offer virtual services and many resources do remain available. Please see our Online and Distance Learning resource page for specific Library resources. Reference services are still available via chat and phone. We do have temporary policies for returning/renewing material.

Map Library Technology Services

The Map Library has three "Full Set of Application" Windows login computers for patron use. These computers requires an active MSU netID. Also among their programs (like all Full Set of Applications computers across campus) they have ArcGIS 10.1. Please see a full list of computer applications for more information. One of the computers is additionally loaded with ERDAS Imagine.

One other computer is a "Selected Resources" computer which does not require a MSU login or password, but is restricted to MSU library resources, including our numerous interactive map resource such as the Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps of Michigan, and use of the flatbed scanner.

The Collaborative Technology Lab (Room W308F) is equipped with a Windows login computer which can project onto a screen.  Laptops may also connect (Mac adapter available for checkout).  It also has a high resolution document camera and a large markerboard

Please visit the Internet and Wireless page for more information about wireless access in the MSU Libraries for information about wireless access.

The Map Library's Full Set of Application computers have several printing options including black & white, color, and color plotting on 36" wide paper. Additionally, patrons may choose to print to etoken printers (letter and ledger size only), or send their prints to the Copy Center on 2-west and pay by cash, check, charge, or to a university account.  Printing costs are the same as in other computer labs. For more information about printing services in the MSU Libraries, see the Print, Plot, & Scan page.

The Map Library has a black & white photocopier that can make copies up to 11" x 17" in size. Photocopies cost $0.10 per sheet. The machine takes dollar bills, coins, and library copy cards. The Copy Center on 2-West has a color copier that will make copies up to 11" x 17" in size. Most Map Library items can be checked out for in-building use only to take items to the Copy Center. Ask Map Library staff before removing anything from the Map Library.

The Map Library has a flatbed scanner and a large rolling scanner. Flatbed scans cost $0.05 each, payable in cash. The rolling scanner can take items up to 42" wide and can scan optically up to 508 ppi (higher with interpolation).  Roll scans cost $1 each.  Please bring a USB drive for saving your files. Media are also available for purchase in the Copy Center on 2-West. Patrons with a MSU NetID may carry images to a Full Set of Applications computer nearby for further editing and use. More self-serve copying and scanning options are available in the Copy Center. Please refer to Scanning Options at the MSU Libraries (pdf) for a complete list of scanning options.
