Poems. Part of a collection of handmade chapbooks, most with cords for hanging (literatura de cordel), published by Ediciones Vigía under the auspices of the Cuban Ministry of Culture. Photocopied text with illustrations and borders on leaves and pages of recycled colored papers and coarse brown papers, glued and stapled at left margin and tied with cords to brown-paper portfolio-style wrappers. Wrappers and titles have painted and mounted decorated-paper illustrations. In brown paper sack with mounted decorated-paper illustrations, pressed flowers and leaves framing window shutters that open, and braided wool handles. Consta de doscientor ejemplares ... --Colophon. The three-dimensional cover, [a kind of mask] cast from recycled cardboard, corn silk, and coffee, represents the Mayan earth goddess Kaxail. Her eyes open onto handmade endpaper[s] blackened by soot and studded with palm fronds ... the product of a 20-year effort to compile a kind of modern Mayan codex ... contains dozens of silk-screen illustrations based on ancient Mayan folk-art patterns but painted by contemporary women -- Publisher's website. This talking box was created as a tribute to the author of these words, Chan K'in viejo, patriarch of the Lacandon Maya, who died the 23rd of December of 1996 at the age of 116. --Colophon. The box and papers inside it were made by Mayan women using pansy flowers and renewable fibers from the rainforest, such as banana trunks, pineneedles, oak leaves, ferns, corn husks, lichen, vines and palm fronds ... --Colophon. |
