Message from the Dean - Spring 2023

Welcome! As we begin the Spring semester, I want to share some important MSU Libraries updates. We continue to work toward implementing and maintaining initiatives that support the Libraries’ strategic plan and look to furthering ways in which the Libraries can help to make our spaces more inclusive and welcoming to all.

Spring semester hours. Regular hours for the MSU Libraries will resume on January 18, 2023. At that time, the Main Library will be open 24 hours per day on Monday through Thursday, with later opening and earlier closing times on the weekends. For safety and security purposes, we will restrict overnight access to the first floor and the basement, but we will continue to monitor building use and open additional floors as space is needed toward the end of the semester. A complete schedule for the Main Library hours is available here.

Soft launch of VuFind Catalog. A beta version of the Libraries’ new VuFind-based Public Catalog was released internally on January 9, 2023, with plans to make it available to the public in Spring Semester. Searches from library pages will continue to point to EDS, but in this beta phase users are encouraged to test out the new catalog and provide feedback to the Digital Development and Strategies team here.

Self-Care Lending Library. We are excited to announce a new collection focused on self-care! Located on 2 West, the Self-Care Lending Library includes 6 pairs of noise-canceling headphones and 6 light therapy lamps. More information is available here. The collection can also be found in the Student Health and Wellness LibGuide.

Brightspot strategy. In October we sent out a campus survey to help us assess the needs of our community as we look to reimagine our spaces and services in partnership with brightspot strategy. We are working toward making some exciting updates to Libraries spaces coming this summer, including the renovation of a major new space to store Special Collections materials and a complete overhaul of the café space.

We are looking forward to a semester of growth and opportunity, including supporting your learning and research needs! As a reminder, if you are unable to find an answer on our website or would like to speak to someone in person, we are available at our information desks as well as by phone at (517) 353-8700.

With warm wishes for a productive semester,

Terri Miller

Interim Dean of Libraries
