Encounters and Exchanges

Now on display through February 6th, Europe and Empires of the East — Ottomans, Safavids, Mughals — Encounters and Exchanges, 1400-1800, examines the Renaissance as a global phenomenon.
Co-curated by Professor Emerita Jyotsna G. Singh and Curator of Rare Books Tad Boehmer, this exhibition explores the complex cultural, religious, and political dialogues between European powers and the three great Eastern empires: the Ottomans, Safavids, and Mughals.
Featuring rare books, travel anthologies, maps, and atlases from the Stephen O. Murray and Keelung Hong Special Collections, this exhibit reveals a world of fascination, exchange, and rivalry. Discover how these encounters shaped the European imagination and helped create a "Global Renaissance."
