What is assistive technology

Assistive technology (AT) is any item, piece of equipment, software program, or product system that is used to increase, maintain, or improve the functional capabilities of persons with disabilities.  
 
The MSU Libraries has an Assistive Technology Center (ATC) located in W124 in the Main Library. Equipment in the Libraries’ ATC includes: 

  • Adjustable desks and chairs
  • SARA Scanning & Reader Appliance
  • Perkins Brailler
  • Scanner, foot mouse, and microphone
  • PC with a variety of assistive software
  • PC for community users with assistive software

The Libraries’ Accessibility Team is hosting several ATC open houses with hours from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. on September 26, October 17, and November 21, 2024. Please stop by then to learn more about the ATC, or ask the Circulation Desk for access to the ATC anytime the Main Library is open.

Description

Lightweight and portable braille label makers like this can quickly and easily create braille labels.

Description

Braille typewriters allow braille materials to be produced more quickly and accurately. The first braille typewriter-like machine was invented in 1892 and the first official Perkins Brailler was produced in 1951.
