Accessibility, Diversity, and Representation in MSU Libraries Collections
Accessibility and Disability Studies Collection
The MSU Libraries’ general collections contain a variety of titles on accessibility. These include titles on disability studies, works written by people with disabilities about their experiences in the disability community, and more. It is of particular importance to the Libraries to include books written by people with disabilities (whether or not they address the subjects of accessibility or disability). The Libraries also intentionally collect works by people with intersectional identities.

Children’s Collection
The Children’s and Young Adult Literature Collection is used heavily by MSU College of Education students as well as community members with children or an interest in children’s literature. The collection focuses especially on books related to diversity and contains many books on accessibility and disability, a few of which are found in this exhibit. These include books that feature characters with disabilities and books that are more accessible to readers with certain disabilities. The Rapunzel book, for example, features high-contrast illustrations that readers with low vision can also enjoy.

Special Collections
The Libraries have many specialized collections, including the Murray and Hong Special Collections and the Children’s and Young Adult Literature Collection.
One important collection featured in this exhibit is the Zine Collection. Zines are self-publications, often produced cheaply on a small scale using tools such as photocopiers and distributed through informal channels. Zines are a way for people from marginalized communities, including the disability community, to communicate with each other and disseminate their ideas and experiences. Often, these marginalized communities are not adequately reflected in mainstream publishing. Zines included in this exhibit are both empowering for the community as well as important sources of information.
