Fencing

illustration of two men fencing in traditional garb

Over the years the Stephen O. Murray and Keelung Hong Special Collections Division in the MSU Libraries has been enriched by the generosity of friends and donors. One of the finest examples of this generosity is the Charles and Ruth Schmitter Fencing Collection, the gift of Charles Schmitter, MSU's retired fencing coach and professor emeritus of health and physical education, and Ruth, his wife. Now numbering almost 600 titles in thirteen languages spanning four centuries, this unique research collection rivals any in the country in size, quality, and breadth.

To see digitized pieces of the collection, visit the Digital and Multimedia Center's Digital Fencing Collection.

For more information, see the MSU Libraries' Special Collection website's Fencing Collection.

Footpaths to Freeways

Map of Michigan

This online exhibit traces how roads have been depicted on Michigan maps from the time it was a territory to the present. In addition to maps, it includes photographs, unique short-lived route guides and artifacts. Maps evolved in step with the road system and showed advances such as named roads which were in time replaced with numbered state and federal routes. Publishers include map giants Rand McNally and Gousha who also supplied oil companies with their ubiquitous freely distributed roadmaps.

The Footpaths to Freeways exhibit is located on the web.

Gervase Markham

Pages from the Art of Fowling

The Stephen O. Murray and Keelung Hong Special Collections is pleased to hold a large collection of books by Gervase Markham (1568-1637) who, in the late 16th and early 17th century, wrote on a variety of topics.  Our latest acquisition is the scarce second edition of Hungers prevention, or, The whole art of fowling by water and land : containing all the secrets belonging to that art, and brought into a true forme or method ..., which provides instructions and charming illustrations for gathering and hunting for food. It is also the first book to describe the existence of flintlock and its use on sitting fowl.
