Michigan State University

Some areas of the Main Library are now open 9am-5pm, Monday-Friday and 12pm to 5pm on Saturday and Sunday. These areas include main-floor access to Circulation as well as our study and computing space on 1 East with access to MSU printing. Capacity for the study space is 50 people. We also now have touchless lockers, where you may pick up materials. Outside of safety, our top priority is to provide access to all of our collections. We continue to offer virtual services. We also are paging materials and will continue to mail materials to faculty, staff, and students living off-campus. We encourage you to use our convenient distance services. Please see our Online and Distance Learning resource page for more information.

Distance Delivery Service

Attention: While in-person classes are suspended, we are lifting the requirement that students, staff and faculty must be more than 50 miles away from campus. Distance Services are open to ALL regardless of your home address (with the exception of location outside of the United States or Canada).

If you are currently affiliated with MSU and located more than 50 miles from East Lansing, we will ship MSU and interlibrary loan (ILL) materials to you! We can ship to your home, or an authorized MSU distance location.

How to request materials

  • For MSU materials, simply use the Get It! button in the catalog record, and select “Request Item as Distance User.”  If you are not already logged into ILLiad you will be prompted to do so.
  • For ILL materials, fill out an ILLiad request form.

How to receive materials

When items are shipped to you, you will be notified via email by both the MSU Interlibrary Services unit (ILS) and UPS.  If we are delivering items to your home, you must sign for the package.  If you are at an authorized MSU distance location, the ILS shipment notification email will instruct you on how and where to pick up your material.

How to track your requests

You can check the status of all of your requests and request renewals on ILL materials through your ILLiad account.  MSU-owned and MeLCat borrowed items can be tracked and renewed on your MSU Library account.

How to return materials

You may return them in person to MSU Libraries or an authorized MSU distance location, or send them back via any trackable method to:

MSU Libraries – ILS
Attn: Nora Madden
366 W Circle Dr
East Lansing MI 48824

What are the current Distance Delivery location options?

  • Your home (if you are 50 miles or further from campus and within the US)
  • Your MSU Extension Office
  • MSUCOM locations at Macomb, the Detroit Medical Center, or the MSUCHM Secchia Center in Grand Rapids
  • Gull Lake Library at the MSU Kellogg Biological Station

How much does it cost?

We ship to you for free, but you must cover the cost of returning the items to us (see “How to return materials,” above.)

Do you ship internationally?

Not at this time.

Do you ship to P.O. Boxes?

No, we must have a street address and someone must sign for the package when it is delivered.

I just realized I won’t be home when my package arrives! Help!

Follow the directions on the slip left by the UPS driver; or try creating an account with UPS My Choice.

I’m going to be away for a month. Can you ship to me there, and then switch back to my home address?

You may choose only one pickup/delivery location per semester; we'll contact you via email to confirm your current address/pickup location. But please let us know if you can't receive packages for any length of time; we'll do our best to hold requests for you until you return.

I’m an adjunct/adjunct clinical faculty/incoming graduate student and I don’t think I have an MSU Library account. How do I sign up?

Email us at ill@lib.msu.edu and we will get you into the system.
