Reimagining MSU Libraries: Early 2024 Construction Update

January marked the end of two major construction projects in the Main Library: the installation of the Center for Teaching and Learning Innovation and the MSU Libraries Starbucks.

The Center for Teaching and Learning Innovation is now complete and open on 2-West. We are excited to have them join us! In addition to that space, we have refreshed some of the group study rooms on 2-West, and you may notice that the meeting rooms for the CTLI turn into group study rooms for students in the evenings and on the weekends. We hope you enjoy these very popular rooms!

Starbucks opened on Jan. 8 on the first floor of the Main Library’s West Wing.  Mobile ordering is available and strongly recommended, and the microwaves and vending machines in the area remain. New furnishings mean that you can enjoy exceptional views of the Beal Garden while taking a coffee break! The Farmer’s Fridge is also a very popular addition to the space, featuring salads and other fresh options. We have restored the Children’s Nook to its previous location, but look for a refresh of that area in Fall 2024.

Our project to remodel the 3rd floor of the East Wing as the new home for our Stephen O. Murray and Keelung Hong Special Collections began the last week of June, and we are making great progress! Walls are being drywalled and painted, flooring is being laid and soon new shelving will be installed. This project will continue until at least November 2024. Expect occasional increased noise in the East Wing during the weekday mornings and early afternoons in Spring and Summer 2024 as construction continues.

Improvements to the HVAC system in the East Wing have meant that we had to close 4-East to the public for now. We expect that floor to reopen in May 2024. In the meantime, materials can be requested online through our library catalog, and they will be held at the Circulation desk for checkout.

As always, we are available at our information desks as well as by phone at (517) 353-8700.
