Think with your Whole Body: Celebrating the Senses in Special Collections

Three-dimensional cover of Conjuros y Ebriedades.

Now through August 14, 2019
Main Library, Special Collections Gallery

All our knowledge begins with the senses, proceeds then to the understanding, and ends with reason.

--Immanuel Kant

Welcome to Special Collections! In this exhibit we celebrate books that go beyond the visual and appeal to our other senses too. Our collection includes books with textures, books that move, books you can taste, smell and hear. And while it's necessary to use exhibit cases in a place that is open 24 hours, the exhibit guide lists similar items you can request in the Special Collections Reading Room for your own hands-on experience. So find out what vellum pages fell like! Put a 360-degree book on a turntable and rotate it by hand. In the words of Buddhist teacher Taisen Deshimaru, think with your whole body.

This Exhibit is generously sponsored by Michigan State University Federal Credit Union.
