Conservation Unit

The Conservation Unit is housed in the Florence G. Wallace Conservation Lab in the Main Library and the Conservation Lab Annex in Giltner Hall. While much of the Lab's focus is on the circulating collections, it is equipped to handle more complex treatments from Stephen O. Murray and Keelung Hong Special Collections and other departments with old and rare or unusual volumes, as well as flat items such as maps and posters.

  • Wallace Conservation Lab
The main conservation lab, located in the MSU Libraries is named after Florence G. Wallace, mother of Margaret Moon, who gave the Moon Endowment, our main source of funding for conservation activities.
  • Lab Annex at Giltner Hall
We still maintain conservation facilities and activities in our old lab in Giltner Hall. Besides book repair, we use the space for collection deacidification, mold remediation and incoming materials triage.
  • Conservation Referral List
A list of bookbinders and conservators in Michigan who take on private work. Please contact these individuals directly for information and estimates. If you have questions about the conservation process, feel free to contact the MSU Libraries Conservation & Preservation Unit.
