Eric Alstrom

Eric Alstrom is the Preservation Librarian and Head of Conservation & Preservation. After receiving his Master of Library and Information Science at the University of Michigan, he studied bookbinding and conservation under Jim Craven at the Bentley Historical Library and worked at the Bessenberg Bindery in Ann Arbor. He has previously served as conservator at Ohio University and Dartmouth College. He began at Michigan State University in 2004 as the Collections Conservator and became the Preservation Librarian in 2012. Eric’s professional interests include designing conservation laboratories (he has renovated labs in all three libraries he has worked at and helped write and edit a book on the subject) and creating innovative processes for the care and preservation of library materials. He is also a book artist and design binder and has exhibited his books both nationally and internationally. He also teaches classes in both conservation and the book arts.
