Classroom/Workshop Space Use Policy

We get a lot of questions about who can use our DSL classroom spaces and how to reserve them. Let us know if you don’t find the information you were looking for here by emailing us at DSLDesk@lib.msu.edu.

The MSU Libraries general classroom use policy states, "The instruction rooms in the Main Library are intended for primary use by librarians and other library staff to teach classes related to the primary mission and goals of the Libraries.

The Library’s Digital Scholarship Lab has two primary classroom spaces - the computer lab area and the Flex Space - and some other spaces that can also be used for classes at need (the 360, the VR room, etc.). Both DSL spaces are intended to support engagement with the DSL by specifically utilizing the hardware/software of the computer lab and/or by working with DSL staff for course engagement or workshops. When the spaces are not in use by a class or workshop, they are intended to be available to all students, faculty, and staff on a walk-in basis. If you’d like to partner with us for a workshop or workshop series, contact us at DSLDesk@lib.msu.edu and let’s talk about what’s possible! We love to work with other departments on workshop offerings.

Use for 1 - 2 Sessions

Requests to use the DSL on a one- or two-session per semester basis are welcome provided that they are making use of the DSL specifically in some way, either by engaging with the hardware/software or by working with DSL staff. Please note that we are not able to serve as either a replacement classroom or a general-purpose classroom computing lab. If that’s what you need, see the MSU IT Computer Labs & Classrooms page.

Use for up to 6 Sessions

Classes interested in a more prolonged engagement with the DSL may contact us at any time with the details of their course and why they are specifically interested in working closely with the DSL. Preference will be given to courses that make heavy use of the hardware/software affordances of the DSL in addition to staff expertise. These courses may schedule up to 6 sessions in the DSL.

Exceptions

Exceptions can be made on a case-by-case basis depending on need; if you would like to work with the DSL more intensively than would be possible with 6 sessions, let us know and we will be happy to discuss what might be possible. Please note that we will only be able to accommodate a small number of exceptions at any given time due to staffing and space considerations.
