How It Works

MSU Libraries Course Materials Program provides faculty with research, referrals, and production support for course packs, online library resources, and contacts within the library. All materials sold to students are produced at cost on a nonprofit basis.

  • Printed course packs are sold in our two partnering bookstores, either online or in-store
  • Electronic course packs are sold from the course D2L page through a secure shopping cart
  • Academic departments who wish to purchase course packs for students via department account, please email us

Production Steps

Our At a Glance page displays our deadlines and a link to our order form. If you have worked with us before, please refer to it.

If you’re new to the process, we encourage you to make your initial contact via email at lib.coursematerials@msu.edu. Include the semester, course number, and a brief description of your project. (If you prefer to talk with us via phone, please include a contact number in your email and we will follow up promptly).

If you want to build a course pack from multiple readings, we can research their availability, copyright requirements (if any), and total pack cost. If you already have a reading list, you can attach it to your email to expedite the process. You can adjust the list after receiving your estimate.

We will also help you evaluate whether a printed or electronic pack will best fit you and your students’ needs.

Faculty who create their own original material may submit the finished course pack file in PDF format (preferred) or in Microsoft Word. Please refer to the instructions for using MSU FileDepot to submit.

Other Considerations

  • Copyright: For copyrighted course packs, copyright availability and ease of publisher contact may affect deadlines. If you are unsure of the copyright status of a work, we can check it for you, and if necessary, refer you to other resources in the library.
  • E-resources: If electronic delivery of some or all of your readings is an option, we can advise you regarding stable linking to electronic resources on the MSU Libraries website. E-resources are an excellent way to expand your course content at no cost to your students.
