Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Can I apply for a passport at the MSU Passport Acceptance Facility if I'm not a student, faculty, or staff member?

Absolutely.  Any U.S. citizen may apply for a U.S. passport with us.

Q. How long does it take to apply for my passport at the MSU Passport Acceptance Facility?

The time it takes to apply for a passport varies.  Bringing all of your documentation, including a completed application, will reduce the time spent in the office.  It typically takes approximately 20-30 minutes per applicant to apply if you bring completed paperwork.

Q. Does the MSU Library Passport Acceptance Facility offer expedited processing?

Yes, you may request expedited processing when you submit your application.  You will need to add $60.00 per application to your check or money order made out to the U.S. Department of State if you choose that service.

Q. How long does it take to get a passport after I submit my application?

Routine processing takes 4-6 weeks and expedited processing takes 2-3 weeks.  Processing times are subject to change. Please check the Department of State travel site for the most current information.

Q. How can I get a passport in less than 2-3 weeks?

The MSU Library Passport Acceptance Facility is not able to process an application faster than expedited service.  You may need to make an appointment at the Detroit Passport Agency.  Every situation is unique and there are special requirements.  See the U.S. Department of State page regarding options.

Q. Is it possible to track my application after it is submitted?

You may track the status of your application online.  Please note that it takes 7-10 business days after applying for your passport to be tracked online.

Q. Will I get my original proof of citizenship back?

Yes. The Passport Agency will send your original proof of citizenship along with any other original documentation back to you in a separate mailing.

Q. Can I apply for a friend or relative who is not present?

No. Every applicant must apply for a new adult or minor passport in person, including minor/infant applicants.

Q. Is there often a long wait during walk-in hours?

We rarely have a wait during early morning walk-in hours.  You may have a short wait between 11 a.m. - noon.  Peak periods, such as the early spring semester and late fall, may have longer wait times during walk-in hours.  The summer is generally slower as many students are away.

Q. Can I pick up my passport at the MSU Passport Acceptance Facility when it is ready?

No.  The passport will be mailed to the mailing address on the application.
