The cover of this magazine has a black-and-white drawing of a mother holding a yellow-capped Kerr canning jar while watching her daughter mix a salad in a large bowl, apparently using contents from two opened jars beside the bowl. The magazine title, Modern HOMEMAKER, is in black print on a yellow background at the top of the cover. A white block under the title has 1945 Mealtime Magic Edition. In the lower left corner is a yellow block with Victory Demands More Canning. On the bottom right is 174 Ways To Serve Home Canned Foods in white print on a black background. The back cover has Modern Homemaker, 710 Title Insurance building, Los Angeles, California, in the upper left in black print on a yellow background. The the right is mailing information (hand-written address: Catherine O. Ghering, Union City, R.F.D. 3. Erie Co., Pa.) and a U.S. Postage Mail Permit. The drawing of a cover of the Kerr Home Canning Book with a hazy yellow border super-imposed over a black-and-white photograph of three shelves of filled canning jars. A black circle on the left has Only 10¢ in white print. A large white arrow pointing to the Home Canning Book cover provides information on how to order the book. The front end page has a patriotic theme: a message from President Franklin D. Roosevelt and how home canning has helped the war effort by reducing the need for commercially canned foods. There is a message from the magazine's editor (Zella Hale Weyant) about the benefits of canning. Page 4 has a typed letter from Mrs. Alexander H. Kerr, President, Kerr Glass Manufacturing Corp. titled "Let's can for Victory in 1945." There is also information on meal planning, a canning budget, methods of canning and processing, canning time tables, tips and suggestions for serving meat, fish, poultry, various vegetables, jams, jellies and preserves, and a canning quiz. The back end page shows all the different sizes of Ker mason jars and caps. There are black-and-white photographs throughout, many with the Kerr jar lids colored in yellow.
