Description

This gold pamphlet has "Ayer's American Almanac 1918 - Sixty-Sixth Year Of Publication" in black above a large drawing of a lion's head. Below is "Ayer's Hair Vigor Does Not Color The Hair" in red above "Published by Dr. J. C. Ayer & Co., Practical and Analytical Chemists, Lowell, Mass., U.S.A." in black. There is a frame of a thin black line and a Victorian deco line. The back cover has a black frame with "We are Very Proud" above a drawing of a peacock on the left and a drawing of a bottle of Ayer's Hair Vigor on the right of "Ayer's Hair Vigor Does not Color the Hair." Below is "Checks Falling Hair, Removes Dandruff, Promotes Growth, An Elegant Dressing." Below a thin black line is "This Almanac Is Presented By" above stamped "Butler Block Pharmacy, 334 Washington Ave., So., Lansing, Mich." At the bottom is a promo for Ayer's products and the company name and address. There is a red string through one hole punched in the upper left corner. The front end page has a double-line frame and lists Formulas for Ayer's Cherry Pectoral, Ayer's Sarsaparilla, Ayer's Pills and Ayer's Hair Vigor. Below are instructions to "Show These Formulas" to your doctor" with "The doctor comes first of all" at the bottom. The back end page, entitled "Long Life, Good Health, Happiness," suggest heeding this advice: "Look well to what you eat and what you drink" and promotes health by eating "Little Meat, More Eggs, Still More Vegetables, and Drink Plenty of Milk." Almanac information includes a page on eclipses, morning and evening stars and chronological cycles for 1918 and a page for each month with moon phases, times for sun rises, sun sets and moon sets, interesting events on days of that month and several jokes at the bottom ("Teacher: Do you understand the difference between liking and loving? Boy: Yes, Ma'am; I like m father and mother, but I love pie."). Several pages promote Ayer's products and all the ailments they relieve and numerous cautions to consult a doctor first. There is one page, "How To Make Money and aid Your Country By Saving Food," which provides tips for saving wheat, meat, milk, fats, sugar and fuel and using perishable foods and local supplies, followed by "General Rules" by Herbert Hoover, United States Food Administrator. There are no page numbers.
