Text Management
Outstanding Unit

The Text Management Unit includes the Hollander Service Desk, Makerspace, Course Materials Program, Publishing Services and Passports. All staff in these units were quick to respond when the University closed in March. The immediate need was to make sure that MSU students could finish the semester. Staff helped to scan many thousands of pages and put them online. There were copyright and accessibility concerns that needed to be addressed, albeit imperfectly, and there was extensive discussion about how to improve the process all along the way. Tyler Smeltekop communicated with faculty to make sure the work was completed, and students could earn their credits. Scanning these materials went beyond courses in March. Text Management is also continuing to scan materials for copy catalogers working from home. They are also scanning full textbooks and completing accessibility work for the Controlled Digital Lending Project.

Most of Text Management were intensively involved in the PPE effort as well, some coming in after closure. Jessica Wagner, Kristina Jones and Jamie Moriarty were instrumental in organizing processes and making sure the work was productive. As a result, over 11,000 face shields and hundreds of sewn face masks have been created for library staff and student employees to assist in their safe return for the Fall semester.
