Binding Preparation

The mission of the Binding Preparation unit is to support the preservation activities and processes of the MSU Libraries. The unit coordinates the binding and rebinding of books and journals for the Main Library and branch libraries through a commercial bindery. The library's current binding contract is with the HF Group. In addition to the selection and preparation of materials to be bound, the unit is responsible for the mass deacidification of new materials and other collections of distinction. The Binding Preparation unit is also responsible for shrink wrapping materials that are too brittle to be bound. Other duties performed by the unit include: quality control of materials returned from the commercial bindery; determining the appropriate treatment for materials in disrepair; creating pockets for supplementary materials; ordering custom-made boxes for certain items; creation and maintenance of records in the online catalog; and environmental monitoring.
